Lupita Nyongo'o's SXSW Suit Is Worth A Second Look
Lupita Nyongo'o' is a thematic red-carpet dresser. She works with her longstanding stylist Micaela Erlanger to create a proposition that relates to the project she is currently promoting and runs with it. Remember the warrior-inspired ensembles that packed a punch on the 2018 Black Panther tour? Or the power-blue Prada Oscars 2014 gown that paid homage to Kenya, where she was raised, and caused #Nairobiblue to start trending on Twitter?
At SXSW this weekend, it was the same story, but with a different narrative. The actor wore a white Honayda spring/summer 2019 suit with an asymmetric tulle shoulder embellishment and metal clips placed artfully in her hair. The muse behind the look? None other than Snoop Dogg. Hair stylist Vernon François shared a picture reference of the rapper wearing butterfly clips on Instagram – much to the delight of his 85k fans, who follow his curated coiffing of Nyong'o's hair. Make-up artist Nick Barose swiped red eyeshadow across her lids for a beauty statement that could have nodded to her character Red in Us – the Jordan Peele-directed psychological thriller that received a standing ovation at SXSW – or could simply have been intended as a strong message for the cameras.
